For a Wall Connector configured for 48-amp output, Tesla specifies a 60-amp circuit breaker. Lower charging configurations are available; the appropriate installation depends on the home and vehicle.
Circuit rating and charging output differ
Tesla’s published table pairs a 60-amp breaker with up to 48 amps of charging, a 50-amp breaker with 40 amps, and a 40-amp breaker with 32 amps. The vehicle’s onboard charger may limit the actual rate further. Read the current documentation for the exact product.
An empty breaker space is only one question
Physical room in the panel does not establish available electrical capacity. An installer needs to evaluate the existing service, the home’s loads, the panel’s permitted equipment, and the proposed charging configuration. A photo of a full panel cannot settle those questions.
Prepare for a useful installation quote
Provide the charger model, vehicle model, preferred charger location, and approximate distance from the panel. Mention planned additions such as another EV or electric appliances. Ask what assessment is included, who handles permits, and how the charger will be commissioned.
Compare the proposed solution
Ask the installer to explain the charging output, the capacity assessment, the cable route, and any proposed load-management equipment. A lower charging rate may meet overnight driving needs. A service upgrade is one possible solution, not something to assume before the assessment.
Keep the diagnosis separate from the symptom.
Keep the service-capacity decision separate from breaker-space planning. Verify product instructions and locally adopted requirements before selecting conductors, protection, or load-management equipment.
